Fiona Ross and Shane O’Mara at Woodford Folk Festival

27 December 2019 - 1 January 2020

Shortlisted for Scots Singer of the Year in the 2019 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards, Fiona Ross has secured her reputation as a gifted song interpreter.

Originally from Glasgow, Fiona now flies the flag for the Scots song tradition in her adopted home of Australia. Her command of the traditional singing style, grounded delivery and extensive repertoire serve to showcase the depth and breadth of this rich tradition.

Fiona has performed at major festivals throughout the country, including the National Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the National Celtic Festival. She is still very much part of the traditional singing community in Scotland and continues to perform at festivals, folk clubs and traditional singing events “in the auld country”.

Fiona’s most recent CD, Clyde’s Water, is part of the esteemed Tradition Bearers series of recordings. The album has Tony McManus on guitar and features John McCusker on fiddle and harmonium. Fiona has toured with Tony McManus, as well as former Steelye Span guitarist Ken Nicol. Her most recent collaboration is with Aria award-winning guitarist Shane O’Mara. Fiona also performs regularly as an unaccompanied singer of traditional Scots song.

In addition to her performances, Fiona delivers workshops and presentations on Scots song related themes. She is currently completing a PhD at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium, where her research focus is on traditional singers who emerged during the course of the folk music revival in Scotland. Fiona herself was mentored by esteemed tradition bearer Andrew Hunter, who has generously shared with her all that he learned from the time he spent with the great Traveller ballad singer Jeannie Robertson and her family in Aberdeen during the 1960s.

Fiona has a love of the work of Robert Burns and is Patron of the Robert Burns Club of Melbourne. Not only does she sing many of Burns songs, Fiona is renowned for her outstanding delivery of the Address To A Haggis!
